UTC Symphony Orchestra Fall Concert - Chattanooga

The UTC Symphony Orchestra will present a free Fall Concert live at First Baptist Chattanooga, 401 Gateway Ave., Chattanooga, 37402.  Masks are required and social distancing will be encouraged.  It will also be livestreamed at   The concert will open with American Salute by Morton Gould.  This rousing favorite incorporates the Civil War song “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” throughout its well-arranged variations that feature all sections of the orchestra.  Next on the program is American composer George Chadwick’s Symphonic Sketches.  This highly enjoyable work, finished in 1904, was written in “an American style”, according to Chadwick, and each of its four movements create a mood prefaced by a poem he wrote (except for one quote by Shakespeare).  The images include music heard at a Boston peace festival, Christmas Eve, a hobgoblin, and a vaudeville skit.  Chadwick’s influences included his New England contemporaries as well as Antonín Dvořák, and many of his themes foreshadow music by Copland and Gershwin.

This 60-member college/community orchestra includes university music majors and non-majors, UTC music faculty members, area music educators, and other talented amateur and professional musicians from the region.  The orchestra is conducted by Sandy Morris.
