Partnerstädte - Chattanooga

Chattanooga ist seit 1977, begründet durch Niederlassungen des Chemiekonzerns Du Pont in beiden Städten, die 2. amerikanische Partnerstadt Hamms. Eingebettet in eine bewaldete Hügellandschaft, prägt der Tennessee River das Bild dieser 180.000 Einwohner zählenden Stadt mit Südstaatenatmosphäre. Zahlreiche Stauseen dienen nicht nur der Elektrizitätsgewinnung, sondern bieten vielfältige Erholungs- und Wassersportmöglichkeiten.

Tropfsteinhöhlen und bizarre Felsformationen sind beliebte Ausflugsziele. Hier fand am Lookout Mountain eine der entscheidenden Schlachten im Sezessionskrieg statt.
Zahlreiche Museen stellen die geschichtliche Entwicklung der Stadt bis hin zur modernen Technik und Kunst dar. Hauptattraktion ist das 1992 eröffnete, größte Süßwasseraquarium der Welt. Die legendäre Lok des Chattanooga Choo Choo ist im Holiday Inn Hotel zu bewundern.

Der I.C.H. organisiert mit der Sister City Association in den Sommerferien regelmäßig einen Austausch für 13- bis 17-jährige Schüler. High-School-Besuche und Studentenpraktika können ebenso vermittelt werden. Reisen mit gegenseitigen Besuchen und Familienaustauschen vertiefen und erweitern die Beziehungen.

Since 1977 Chattanooga has been one of Hamm`s two American sister cities. This partnership was begun by employees of the DuPont Chemical Company, which has plants in both cities.

Situated on the Tennessee River and surrounded by foothills of the Smoky Mountains, Chattanooga, often called the Scenic City of the South, is rich in natural beauty. A string of lakes along the river, used in part for producing electricity, also offer Chattanooga`s 180,000 inhabitants a wide variety of water sports and other outdoor recreational activities.

In and around Chattanooga are numerous caverns, the most spectacular of which is Ruby Falls, a large, 145-foot-waterfall inside a deep cave in Lookout Mountain. With its unusual rock formations, it has attracted millions of visitors. In November 1863, on top of Lookout Mountain, one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War took place. That and other battlefields in and around Chattanooga constitute one of the nation`s largest military parks.

Visitors interested in arts, music, technology, or history will find a variety of museums, galleries, theatres, and other locations in our sister city. Its most celebrated attraction is the Tennessee Aquarium, the world`s largest freshwater aquarium, open since 1992. The legendary Chattanooga Choo Choo, immortalized by Glenn Miller´s song, is located near downtown Chattanooga and is now part of the Holiday Inn Hotel complex.

For several years the I.C.H. has organized exchanges, which usually take place during the summer holidays, for students between 13 and 17 years of age. The I.C.H. has also helped make possible a year abroad for German high school students who want to spend a year in Chattanooga and internships for university students who wish to work for American companies as a form of training. Exchanges have also taken place between groups of adults and between families from both cities.
